Bookbinding

Bookbinding has endless possibilities, as a craft in itself, and for combining with the decorative crafts of marbling, cyanotype and calligraphy. Some years ago I took a course focusing particularly on making decorative spines, books as works of art, as well as containers for knowledge and ideas. The picture above shows one of the spines I made (mid construction) using coptic binding and French link binding with decorative ribbons. Each section or 'signature' of the book is covered using either a cyanotype, sheet of marbled paper, or a reused page from an old A-Z road map, from which I chose pages showing maps with significance and memories, such as places I used to live.
